This week on Record Time, the Keepers of the Akashic Records ask us a question that feels fraught with taboo! They ask:

Are you burying your desires in gratitude?

This question feels so taboo to me, because how can we talk shit about gratitude?! Gratitude is such a beloved practice across so many modalities, cultures, and religions – so to imply that gratitude could be covering something up feels a little edgy to me.

Before we dive in deeper, I would love to remind you that this is simply just one perspective. If this doesn’t resonate, you can absolutely just leave this behind. Now that we’ve taken our grain of salt, let’s dive in!

Do you ever experience moments where you are feeling a sense of dissatisfaction, and almost instantly a voice pops into your head saying “but you should be grateful!” Perhaps this thought just squishes down the feeling of wanting something more, and drowns it in a swirl of gratitude and guilt.

This is what the Records are talking about when they ask us this question.

It’s important to note that gratitude is not the problem here – it’s theshould” that causes all the trouble.

When we have that thought that says “But you should be grateful!” – that usually implies that we are not, in fact, feeling grateful at the moment. And the feeling of inner guilt for not being grateful when you think that you should be, can cause all kinds of stickiness and discomfort. That guilt might just be powerful enough to silence whatever dissatisfaction was trying to come up and be heard.

The Records are inviting us to consider: Could there be a seed of desire in your dissatisfaction, underneath the forced gratitude?

Is there something in you that is saying, “I wish this was better. This isn’t good enough. I’m not happy with the way things are. I want something better.”

And when that desire and dissatisfaction start to stir inside you, are they immediately overruled by thoughts that sound like “But you should just be grateful! Look how much you have! Look how good things are – you’re being so ungrateful for wanting more! Other people have so much less. You’re a bad person for not being grateful for what you have.”

That last one is a doozy. That story we have, that “I’m a bad person if I’m not grateful” is often enough to bury our desire for something better, without us even recognizing that the desire was there in the first place.

If this ever happens to you, the Records are inviting us to give ourselves radical permission to be honest about how we really feel in that moment.

In those moments when the feeling of guilt urges us to be grateful – what would it be like to admit that we are not actually feeling completely grateful right now?

Just for 5 seconds! Can we hold this feeling of dissatisfaction, and this lack of gratitude, for just 5 seconds?

Instead of immediately trying to squelch any trace of desire (perhaps disguised as dissatisfaction) with gratitude, can we give ourselves just one moment to say the following to ourselves:

“I feel like I should be grateful, but I’m not feeling grateful right now, and what I really want is…”

(You can say this in your mind, just to yourself, and no one ever has to know that you were ever ungrateful!)

I invite you to try to finish that sentence, the next time this comes up for you! Let yourself complete that sentence with full permission to say whatever comes up for you!

This is a playful exercise that can help your desires reveal themselves to you. You can even try using that sentence as a journal prompt, the next time you feel like you should be feeling grateful when you’re not.

That’s the invitation for contemplation this week. You can receive the full Akashic Transmission on Desire & Gratitude by watching the video below!

If this sparks something in you, I’d LOVE to hear from you! What’s underneath & alongside your gratitude? Feel free to comment on this post and share what resonated with you!

And if you know someone that could benefit from this perspective, please share this video with them and spread the goodness!
