This week on Record Time we explore an interesting idea: effortful pleasure. Perhaps that phrase sounds weird or new to you, maybe it even sounds like an oxymoron. Yet, this week the Keepers of the Akashic Records are offering us the perspective that:
Effortful pleasure is still pleasure.
What does that even mean? Let’s get into it!
Maybe when you think of experiencing pleasure, or feeling good, the idea of “effort” or “working for it” is not part of the picture. That makes sense! There’s something about “effortlessness” and “pleasure” that just seems to go together. Effortless pleasure might sound more correct or logical than effortful pleasure. And yet, the Records are sharing that effortful pleasure is still pleasure.
Are you willing to put in effort when it comes to feeling good? Or do you tend to think that feeling good should be effortless, or else what’s the point? Why would anyone work hard to feel good, doesn’t that defeat the purpose of pleasure?
I think it’s important to note here that when the Records use the word “effort” or “effortful” in this discussion, they don’t mean “exhaustive.” They aren’t saying wear yourself out or even “work hard” to create pleasure for yourself. They are simply inviting us to engage with pleasure intentionally.
How many times a day do you think about doing a small nice thing for yourself, but then think “no, it’s fine. I’m fine, without it.” and then you don’t do it. That’s exactly what the Records are talking about here. Are there tiny little moments of pleasure or goodness that you deny yourself, simply because you’re in the habit of saying “No, I’m fine.”
In those moments, when you hear yourself thinking or saying “No, I’m fine” when you’d really rather have the cup of tea, or light the fancy candle, or even just adjust the temperature of the room – take the extra moment of tiny effort to do the nice thing for yourself.
This can sound so superficial, and pointless – and that’s the whole point of this reminder from the Records. Pleasure is not frivolous or a luxury – it’s a necessity. When you go without pleasure for too long, it has a very real impact on your sense of well being (whether it’s mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually, or all of those things). Going through life devoid of simple pleasure is possible, you can survive without pleasure. Perhaps pleasure isn’t a necessity for survival, but pleasure is a necessity for a happy, healthy life.
If you’re looking to experience life as more than just a test of survival, and would like to enjoy your life and experience a deeper sense of well-being, we cannot keep compromising or dismissing our experience of simple day-to-day pleasures. And if we were never taught to orient towards pleasure, and create pleasure in our lives regularly, then we need to learn how to feel good! Part of this learning process might be accepting that at least at first, pleasure is something that will require our effort and intention. We cannot go from never thinking about and never experiencing pleasure straight into effortless, regular pleasure. We have to slowly teach ourselves how to feel good effortlessly (as in, with less effort). We can start this learning process by engaging in effortful pleasure – making the small efforts to intentionally engage with pleasure throughout the day when we would normally not think about it or dismiss it as unnecessary.
This is a wonderful place to begin.
I invite you to contemplate this right now – is there something tiny that you could do for yourself right now that would offer you a little bit of pleasure? Maybe it’s as simple as refilling your cup of tea (or having a first cup of tea!), or spraying a nice fragrance in the room that you’re in. Maybe it’s even simpler, like yawning and stretching!
The invitation from the Records this week is to start to notice the little opportunities throughout your day where pleasure awaits you, with just a little bit of effort.
If you try this out, I’d absolutely LOVE to know what little moments of pleasure you created for yourself! Please comment on the video below and share your brilliance, I’d love to learn from you!
And if you know anyone who might enjoy this perspective on pleasure, share this with them and spread the goodness.
